New Youth Sport Models Are Emerging
The Basketball Game Model from Lee Taft is the latest youth sport solution that bring that brings simple and affordable options back to families.
Welcome to the 175th edition of The Physical Movement. A milestone for sure for a pandemic project documenting various topics in youth sport and performance. Thanks for joining me on the journey!
Over the previous 174 editions, we have covered numerous topics not only documenting some of the issues around youth sport and their genesis, with a lean towards solutions.
Towards progress.
Towards improvement.
It’s not enough in this world to lament the problems, lord knows there are enough, but imperative we do something about it.
We have met with various leaders like Erica Suter, Matt Young, Jerry Weinstein, Doug Mckeen, Frank Fascia, Wayne Burke who are making an impact, consistently for years and years. Their passion is unrivalled and they are only a few of the many that are doing same in your community. We also met Lee Taft in June of 2020. Lee is one of those leaders who also leans toward action. For 30+ years Lee has devoted to improving and developing young athletes and environment that surrounds them. The folks mentioned above have a lot in common: The focus us doing something about making youth sport a better place.
Lee Taft’s newly released Basketball Game Model has “better” in mind.
This is not the first time we have documented a “better” model for our young athletes. Stanley Stick Hockey Association in Guelph, Ontario is another example of taking the now normalized craziness of too many games, too many tryouts , too much bench time, not enough time on skill development and putting forth another way.
Playing basketball as a youngster shouldn’t mean sacrificing family time and throwing away hard-earned money. If you operate youth basketball correctly, you will see more game-play improvement, healthy competition, and overall tactical, skill, and athletic development. - Lee Taft
The Basketball Game Model has one objective in mind:
From The Basketball Game Model:
The problem is the game has been stolen by travel team clubs, tournament organizers, and marketers, brainwashing players, parents, and coaches into thinking the current model of non-stop playing and entering “high exposure” tournaments is the ONLY way to go.
Without a doubt, the game must be “given back” to our youth, families, and communities!
The Basketball Game Model is the new blueprint for an environment in which gameplay is governed by developmental principles, inclusiveness, player-centric, and flexibility. This model has proven to work for a coach with 50+ years of playing and coaching the game with a massive understanding of the developmental stages of youth players.
If you are sold on traveling every weekend, paying high tournament entry fees, paying overpriced spectator ticket entrance fees, and the angry and violent environment it creates - then The Basketball Game model isn’t for you.
However, if you want to impact our youth players' developmental skills and athleticism - then The Basketball Game model is for you.
The Basketball Game Model is an outline by which those willing to do the work can learn the concepts and modify to fit their community’s needs.
The BGM focuses on developing the player by showing you easy-to-follow steps on how to build a sustainable and strong program.
Each section of The BGM is designed to drive you to think differently about how to develop and implement youth basketball. It's not a one-size-fits-all, but the "parts" within this model will surely spark ideas and methods that work for your community.
Stanley Stick Hockey Association & The Basketball Game Model are solutions to well documented problems in youth sport:
Not enough time on task developing the sport specific skills while minimizing the opportunity to develop physical literacy.
Too much travel and cost at the expense of family time, and playing other sports and having other interests.
A friend recently told me that her family recently moved her son to a neighboring youth soccer association because they were “told’ the following:
The boy could not play other sports. He was to commit to 11 months on soccer and could not play on his high school team. The coach was taking all the fun out the sport for the kid, while monopolizing his time and leaving nothing for anything else. Many within the community do not question the policies of the youth sport organization and comply or leave.
Guess what choice they are making?
Yes, they are leaving. This family decided to go to an organization that has a different take with multiple sports encouraged, and more time away from one sport of focus.
More and more programs will materialize in the coming years. In our community, there is a need for all sports to reconsider their model, and for families to know that they have options.
Playing locally should not mean less physical and social development. It should be the opposite. More time playing with less time in hotels at “exposure” tournaments 4 hours away.
The Basketball Game Model is simple, inexpensive and the blueprint provided by someone who has a penchant for action.
We like solutions!
